The DMMO Orchesta rehearses for the 2009 "Stars of Tomorrow" concert

The Orchestra

We are the orchestra for the Des Moines Metro Opera, which is based in Indianola, Iowa. The orchestra accompanies all main-stage productions of the Opera's annual Summer Festival, which normally takes place during the latter part of the month of June and runs until the middle of July. There are sixteen main-stage performances of three operas each season. We also acompany the James E. Collier Artist Apprentices at their 'Stars of Tomorrow" concert, performed at Drake University's Sheslow Auditorium in early July. In addition, the orchesta's musician's are involved in a very succesful chamber music series performed at Lekberg Hall on the campus of Simpson College.

In terms of size, we number roughly fourty-four musicians, but the size and make-up of the orchestra varies depending on the requirements for each opera we accompany. The orchestra averaged about fifty musicians for the 2003 season productions of Verdi's Falstaff and Gounod's Faust. The 2004 and 2005 seasons saw an orchestra of about the same size. The 2007 season presented the company with the challenge of seating an orchestra of over sixty musicians in the pit for Verdi's Otello.
Our musicians come from all over the country, even Canada!
