We are the orchestra for the Des Moines Metro Opera Festival which has its
home base in Indianola, Iowa. We accompany all main stage productions of the
Opera's annual Summer Festival, which takes place during the latter part of
the month of June and runs into the middle of the month of July. All told,
we are involved in sixteen performances of three operas each summer, not
counting the Artist Apprentice Concert which is performed at Drake
University's Sheslow Auditorium in early July. In addition, musicians from
the orchestra are involved in a chamber music series performed at Lekberg
Hall on the campus of Simpson College. We are an orchestra of
forty-four
core musicians, but the actual make-up depends largely on the requirements
for each season. For the 2003 season's production of Verdi's Falstaff;
Gounod's Faust; and Robert Ward's The Crucible, the size of
the orchestra averaged about fifty musicians, which was about the same for
the 2004 and 2005 seasons. The 2007 summer season presented the orchestra
with the challenge of fitting an orchestra of over 60 musicians into the pit
for the production of Verdi's Otello. The musicians who make up the
orchestra come from all parts of the country, and even Canada!
