About the Opera

The Des Moine Metro Opera celebrates its 39th anniversary season during the summer of 2011. It was founded in 1973 by Dr. Robert L. Larsen and the late Douglas Duncan. The company has its home base in Indianola, Iowa, and performances take place at the Blank Performing Arts Center on the campus of Indianola's Simpson College.
Each season, staring in mid-June and running through mid-July, the company hosts a summer opera featival that includes three main-stage productions, plus an Apprentice Artist Program of outstanding quality that has set the standard for other regional opera companies. Many of DMMO's artists have gone on to musicially rewarding careers, having gotten their start with DMMO's Apprentice Artist Program.
During the off-season, the Des Moines Metro Opera serves as the parent company for Opera Iowa, a small but expert touring company that travels all over the region, bringing opera to audiences who normally would never have a chance to see an opera. Opera Iowa has traveled as far as China and Japan, performing to great acclaim. For more information about the company's activities, click here.

The Des Moines Metro Opera will be marking another first during the Summer Festival of 2011. This will be the first season under the direction of the newly appointed Artistic Director, Micheal Egel. Appointed to succeed Founder and Artistic Director Robert L. Larsen in September of 2010, Mr. Egel is no stranger to the DMMO, having served with the company since 1994.
